This Week’s Magnified Fragment is D3

Hi and welcome back to the Chrissie Murphy Designs Blog. It’s great to be back into our Magnified Fragments. This week’s Magnified Fragment is D3. So without further ado, let’s get into it and have a look at the enhancer we’ll be using. I’ve also included some links to resources you might find helpful for this week.

Here’s a quick sketch of what the fragment looks like as a reference for you.

This week’s Magnified Fragment Enhancer is to use reverse map tangling

This week’s Magnified Fragment Enhancer is to use reverse map tangling.

I like this definition of map tangling I found on the Drawing from the Day website. A link to it is here.

“Map Tangling” is when a watercolor wash is applied to a tile in such a way that the colored portion is left with ragged edges., and could be interspersed with lots of white space or just have white space surrounding it. Only the colored space is then tangled. The watercolor background frequently resembles the map of a continent or country–hence the name.

Drawing from the Day

This is a great definition of Map Tangling. You can see my attempts at this original technique here.

Reverse map tangling is the opposite of this. It’s where only the white space is tangled and the coloured space is left clear.

Some resources to help you with this week’s Magnified Fragment

I have found it hard to find resources on this technique, but I’ve been able to track back through some Instagram examples, to where Anoeska Waardenberg, CZT was experimenting and discovered the technique through play. She touches on it in her blog here.

Anoeska’s tile she created can be seen below.

Here are some other examples I saw on Instagram. One by Elaine’s Tangle Land and one by Manolo Latorre, CZT.

This is Elaine’s tile.

And this is Manolo’s.

Hopefully this gives you a good idea of the technique we’ll be using.

Don’t forget

If you have any ideas for an enhancer, leave me a comment and we’ll feature them in upcoming fragments.

It’s never to late to join in, the more the merrier. Just tag your tile with #MagnifiedFragments and I’ll see it, share it and add it to our gallery.
