Stewarding Your Art Supplies: Making the Most of What You Have

Hi, and welcome back to the Chrissie Murphy Designs blog. Today, I want to share something that’s been close to my heart for a while — stewarding your art supplies and truly making the most of what you have.

As artists, it’s easy to get drawn to new supplies — fresh pencils, pristine sketchbooks, or the latest paintbrushes promising to boost your technique. But while quality materials can definitely enhance creativity, being mindful and caring for the art supplies you already own is just as important. When you steward your supplies well, you not only reduce waste but deepen your connection to your tools and open the door to new creative possibilities. Let’s explore this together.

Get to Know Your Supplies: Take Stock of What You Have

Before you rush to buy new materials, take a moment to organise your workspace and really look at what you already own. Do you have pencils worn down to stubs that still work for shading? What about half-used sketchbooks with blank pages waiting for your ideas? Are there markers or paints you’ve set aside but could revive? Taking inventory might surprise you — you could find supplies that spark fresh inspiration.

Revitalise and Repurpose Your Art Supplies for Longer Use

Some supplies might seem unusable but can be brought back to life with a little care. Broken coloured pencils can be sharpened for texture work. Pencil extenders help you keep using those tiny stubs comfortably. Dried-out fineliners can sometimes be revived with a dip in rubbing alcohol or stored tip-down to improve ink flow.

Old sketchbooks don’t have to be discarded either — you can rework pages or tear them into smaller pieces for new collages. Markers that have become scratchy are great for adding gestural marks. Repurposing your materials saves money and encourages creative experimentation.

Mix and Match: Creative Ways to Extend Your Art Materials

Combining your art supplies in new ways can spark fresh ideas and extend their life. Try layering different types of graphite or blending coloured pencils with erasers for unique textures. Add ink to sketches for depth. Use scraps of paper, old notes, or past drawings as backgrounds or collage elements. The key is curiosity — ask yourself, does it really have to be used the same way every time?

As you experiment with combining and repurposing supplies, you might feel inspired to try new materials or techniques. Mindful Stewardship: Using Every Bit of Your Art Supplies

Being mindful about waste helps stretch your supplies further. Save small pencil pieces in a tin for easy access later, and use extenders for longer life. Mechanical pencils can reduce waste, and leftover eraser bits are perfect for smudging or sharpening for precise lifting effects. Using every bit honours the resources and effort behind your materials — and your wallet will thank you.

Swap, Share, and Support Sustainable Art Practices

If you have supplies that no longer fit your practice, think about swapping with other artists or donating to community groups, schools, or art programs. I often pass supplies on to my niece, who’s passionate about art. Sharing materials keeps creativity flowing and prevents waste. Borrowing tools for occasional use can be more sustainable than buying something new.

Purchasing Art Supplies Mindfully for a Sustainable Practice

Sometimes, new materials are necessary. When that happens, choose wisely. Opt for high-quality, versatile supplies that will last rather than accumulating unused items. Consider sustainable and ethically produced products that align with responsible creative practices. Being mindful about your purchases supports your art and the planet.

How Stewarding Your Art Supplies Can Spark Creativity

Working within limits often leads to unexpected creativity. Using what you have can push you to think differently and discover innovative ways to express your vision. Stewarding your supplies fosters gratitude and resourcefulness — a powerful mindset for making meaningful art without excess.

By thinking consciously about your art supplies — how you use them and when you buy more — you help build a sustainable creative practice and deepen your relationship with your tools. Next time you’re tempted by new materials, pause and explore what’s already at your fingertips. You might be surprised by what you find.
