Hi and welcome back to the Chrissie Murphy Designs Blog. In today’s post I’m going to be sharing what I’m doing for Inktober 2021. Inktober is kicking off in a matter of days, so I want to take this opportunity to fill you in while I can.
Now before we go any further – I have a disclaimer I’d like to share. I have recently signed up to be an Affiliate for Amazon Australia. What have I done for Inktober in the past?
I completed my first Inktober in 2014, and I have participated each year up to and including 2018.
The last 2 years I haven’t participated. The thought of working for 31 days straight on art felt like a slog. Because it didn’t feel like joy, I knew something was up. Looking back, I believe it was burnout.
For each Inktober that I have participated, I’ve tried to follow a theme. Here’s what I’ve done over the years;
2014 – this was my first year, so I really tried to follow Inktober philosophy and use ink every day for 31 days. You can view this Inktober on my Facebook Album of the same name.
2015 – Ornamental scrolls and flourishes. I wanted to use the 31 days to master ornamental scrollwork (I didn’t by the way😂) You can view this Inktober on my Pinterest Board of the same name.
2016 – Greeting Cards. I used the 31 days to create different greeting cards. You can view this Inktober on my Pinterest Board of the same name too.
2017 – Surface patterns. In this Inktober I created different surface patterns each day. You can view this Inktober on my Pinterest Board of the same name.
2018 – 31 Names of God as Logo’s. For this Inktober I worked on logo design, and created 31 Names of God as logos. You can view this Inktober on my Pinterest Board of the same name as well.
What will I be doing for Inktober 2021?
I deliberated long and hard about participating in Inktober this year. That same old feeling of fondness is there, but this year I’ve been having doubts about whether I can finish it.
I have decided I will be participating, but I’m going to be doing things differently this year.
There is no way I can work on 31 single tiles, plus blog, continue with Magnified Fragments and journal. So I’ve decided to work on one very large piece only for 31 days.
I’ll be following the Inktober 2021 prompts by Stephanie Jennifer CZT 21
I plan on following the prompts that Stephanie Jennifer CZT has released. Stephanie has put together 31 days of tangle prompts and I will be doing my best to follow them for my larger piece.
What inspired me to work this way for Inktober 2021?
There is an artist by the name of Tom Parker who in Inktober 2016 followed the 31 official Inktober prompts and created one very spectacular drawing. You can view it here.
Tom was the first person I had seen take this approach and I was intrigued by what he created.
With being so time poor this year, I thought this approach might work best for me. So I’m keen to see what 31 days of tangles can produce.

What materials am I planning on using
- Canson watercolour paper
- Derwent Inktense pencils
- Signo Uniball Gel Pens
- Prismacolor Premier Coloured Pencils in varying colours
- Grey Copic Markers in W4, W5 and W7
How big will my Inktober 2021 piece be?
It will be 30cm x 30cm square (three times my normal size)
