May’s Expressive Challenge “Break it to Make it”

Hi and welcome back to the Chrissie Murphy Designs Blog. It’s time for May’s Expressive Challenge! This month I’m calling it “Break it to Make it!” Let’s have a look at what’s involved in this months challenge.

May’s Expressive Challenge

The Expressive Challenge – what is it?

Each month I release an Expressive Challenge. It’s a challenge that’s designed to get you expressing yourself through creativity. Unlike other creative challenges on the internet, the Expressive Challenge will not be limited to one style or medium. You can create whatever you like each month.

Ok, what do I do with it when it’s finished?

I have set up a hashtag for our Expressive Challenges. When you have finished your challenge, take a pic of what you’ve created, fill us in a bit on what you’re trying to express (only if you feel comfortable enough to do so) and share it online (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter…. whatever works for you – I’m on most, so I’ll see it). Here’s the important bit, use the hashtag #CMDExpressiveChallenge.

How do I find out about an upcoming Expressive Challenge?

Each Expressive Challenge will be notified in the monthly Expressive’s List email, and also here on the blog.

Break something to make something

So what is May’s Expressive Challenge?

This month I challenge you to break something to make something. It’s a bit like upcycling or repurposing I guess… but we’ll be focusing on expression as we do it.

You can use anything you like, just make sure you break it and then use it (in some way) to make something new.

What can I make for May’s Expressive Challenge?

You can make anything you like! Here’s a couple of ideas to get your creative juices flowing…

  • If you’re a Zentangle Artist like me, you could cut up an old tile and use it to make a new one.
  • Or maybe you make cards, if so, try ripping up some old cards to be put together to make a new one.
  • Maybe you sew, try pulling apart a shirt that you find at Vinnie’s to make something entirely new, like a bag etc.
  • One more idea, maybe you make jewellery, so try pulling apart some jewellery to use bits and pieces to make a new piece.

You get the idea – break something to make something.

Quote about broken things

Try to think about…

When you’re choosing what to break and make, think about what you would like to express with what you’re making. Is there something that’s deep on your heart at the moment? How could you symbolise it with what you’re using?

Be intentional about what you choose for May’s Expressive Challenge. You have an opportunity to express yourself here, so use the time that’s offered to reflect on things. One of the journal prompts might even assist you.

Want to be more Expressive?

Join the Expressive’s List to begin to learn ways you can start to express yourself creatively. With the Lord there are no moulds or limits, just possibilities, and the promise of unearthing who you were created to be.

Expressive Subscribers receive an email each month that contains creative inspiration and ideas, links to helpful resources and a month’s worth of journal prompts to stimulate creative expression. These prompts are a great way of learning to express yourself when you’ve never really tried it before. Fill in your details below to sign up.

Until next time, listen to your heart and sharpen your coloured pencils. A masterpiece awaits!

Bless you my friend

Chrissie xx
