Introducing The Expressive Challenge!

Hi and welcome back to the Chrissie Murphy Designs Blog. I believe that the very act of expressing is all that’s needed to trigger an understanding of who you are. And one of the best ways to get going is with a creative challenge. So without further ado, let me introduce you to our monthly Expressive Challenge.

The Expressive Challenge – what is it?

Each month I will release an Expressive Challenge. It’s a challenge that’s designed to get you expressing yourself through creativity. Unlike other creative challenges on the internet, the Expressive Challenge will not be limited to one style or medium. You can create whatever you like each month.

Ok, so I make something… What do I do with it when it’s finished?

I have set up a new hashtag for our Expressive Challenges. When you have finished your challenge, take a pic of what you’ve created, fill us in a bit on what you’re trying to express (only if you feel comfortable enough to do so) and share it online (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter…. whatever works for you – I’m on most, so I’ll see it). Here’s the important bit, use the hashtag #CMDExpressiveChallenge.

My whole purpose for this blog, and all I do, is to create a Home for the Expressive. I want to create somewhere where we can hang out together, share together, encourage together and express together. The #CMDExpressiveChallenge is a way we can unite online 💛 and support each other on this journey.

How do I find out about an upcoming Expressive Challenge?

Each Expressive Challenge will be notified in the monthly Expressive’s List email, and also here on the blog.

So what is April’s Expressive Challenge?

This month I challenge you to create something using only three elements and only three colours. I know, that sounds relatively simple…. that’s until you get into it and realise it’s not as easy as you think.

What can I make?

You can make anything! Here’s a couple of ideas to get your creative juices flowing…

  • If you’re a Zentangle Artist like me, you could use three tangle patterns and three colours and make a tile.
  • If you like to paint, you could do a landscape painting with three elements (eg earth, trees and sky) and use only three colours.
  • Or maybe you make cards, if so, try using only three stamps and only three colours to create a Thinking of You card for example.
  • One more idea, maybe you crochet, so try using only three stitch types and three colours to make a small bag.

You get the idea – only three elements and only three colours.

Try to think about…

When you’re choosing your elements and colours, think about what you would like to express with what you’re making. Is there something that’s deep on your heart at the moment? How could you symbolise it with colour and elements?

Be intentional about what you choose, you have an opportunity to express yourself here, so use the time that’s offered to reflect on things. One of the journal prompts might even assist you.
