Hi and welcome back to another week on the Chrissie Murphy Designs blog. Tonight we’re going to connect with the Creator through the beauty of creation and explore the importance of seasons as an artist.
In Ecclesiastes 3:1, Solomon says there’s a season for everything – “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” As a creative who is made in the image of the Creator, there is a season for everything you do and every activity you undertake.
Understanding this can help you rest when it’s time to rest, and push in when it’s time to push in. It alleviates the pressure associated with feeling like you need to continually perform and produce as an artist. Instead you are aware that there are seasons for everything, and the seasons become your guide.
My mother-in-law sent me this picture about a week ago of this beautiful tree in full bloom in Cardwell. Isn’t it absolutely spectacular!! It’s something that’s noticed and admired by passers by, as people stop to take pictures of it…. BUT…. it’s not like this all year round.
It’s only like this because now is it’s season. Now is it’s season to bloom! It couldn’t bloom months ago as the conditions were too cold, so it’s waited patiently for the conditions to be just right. And then bam!!! This marvellous display is on show for everyone to see. It has been well worth the wait!
This tree knows what it needs to bloom. It knows what season it’s in. It knows what conditions it requires to bloom. As soon as this season passes, a new season will begin for this tree. The next season won’t be as spectacular as this one, but it’s vital none the less.
Without the passing of seasons this tree will never bloom again. It’s absolutely critical that this tree passes from this season into the next. It’s part of a bigger process that works together to ensure the tree will have another season to bloom.
This is the same for us as artists. It is so easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of continual content creation. We are living in a fast paced society, where people expect new creative content to be uploaded daily. The pressures around committing to this level of creation are horrendous and are so far removed from the concept of seasons.
A tree does not stay in full bloom forever…. period! I’d go so far as to say, if it did, I think it would probably die from exertion or exhaustion. So why do we think we are any different?
There are seasons to plan, seasons to create, seasons of prosperity, seasons of loss, seasons to grow, seasons to rest, seasons to excel, seasons to struggle, seasons of disappointment, seasons of joy, and then there’s seasons to bloom. There are seasons for everything… good and bad!
But all of them are part of a bigger process, you will never have a season to bloom if you don’t go through the other seasons. They all work together to ensure you will have seasons where you bloom multiple times throughout your life as an artist.
When you start to become aware that your life as an artist is made up of various seasons, you will be alert and expectant to the change in seasons. Just as I know that spring is the time that the yellow tree will bloom, I can also be expectant about the seasons that make up my overall processes as an artist. I can learn that a season of rest will always follow a season of excelling, or a season of planning is always followed by a season to create. Then the seasons really do become your guide.
Spend some time in this current season, reflecting on the seasons you experience as an artist. Know the season you’re in and begin to note down the conditions you need to be able to bloom. This way, when the time is right, you’re putting on a show that passers by are gonna want to stop and see! Get ready to bloom girlfriend!
Until next time, connect with the Creator, let Him inspire you. His magnificence and beauty is everywhere, even in art, craft and creation.
Bless you my friend
